FRIENDly news: 5.31.11

Dear Museum School Families,

The most exciting thing to report this week is that we are kicking off our partnership with the San Pasqual Academy to provide fresh, organic, seasonal produce available for pick up right from the Museum School! Check out the flier: Organic Produce  for more details about the programs that will benefit from this innovative opportunity. Use this Order Form to sign up for the CSA delivery and ensure that you do not miss the chance to pick up your fresh groceries at the same time you are picking up your not-so-fresh kid this Friday afternoon! Important: you must submit payment for your order IN CASH by Wednesday of each week that you plan to take a delivery. That's tomorrow for your first delivery on Friday! If you'd like to see what is in the CSA delivery, check out the Dragon Organics blog at www.dragonorganics.blogspot.com

The annual art auction benefiting the Museum School is set for Saturday, June 18th at Jett Gallery. Pickup some fabulous art for Dad this Father's Day! It's a great time in a great venue for a great cause. Win-Win-Win!

Did you see all the news from Phil about what's going on this month? It boggles the mind. I am thankful for whatever magic thing I signed up for that automatically synchs the school calendar with the one on my phone. If you want more info about how to do this, ask Phil. Because as I said several times today, I'm only pretending to know what I am doing.

Have a great week!

FRIENDly News: 2.15.11

Dear Museum School Families,

From the muck of my post-valentine haze, I can still sense that love is in the air, and chocolate is on sale! How fortuitous that this week's promotion is for donations of CHOCOLATE! Send in a delectable treat that will be featured in one of the amazing auction bundles at our upcoming Gala, and you will be automatically entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes. Please note: although we love you deeply, we must ask that you avoid heart shaped or otherwise Valentine-y goods.

If you're planning ahead, remember that next week we will be asking for GIFT CARDS!

Our next Gala meeting will be held this Thursday at 4:30. We changed from our regular Friday afternoon time slot because some of us will be welcoming home our 6th graders after a week at camp on that day, and we'll need to focus on smothering them with affection and forcing them to shower, not necessarily in that order.

Have you purchased your tickets yet? We're doing pretty well, but are still only about halfway to reaching the minimum number of tickets we need to sell to ensure this event's success. Therefore, we are prepared to offer you a bribe. There will be a one-stop-gala-business table set up outside of school on Wednesday after school, and the first 25 people who purchase tickets will receive a gift certificate for Tutti Fruiti Yogurt!  What could be more appealing than an icy cold yogurt on what promises to be a freezing, wintery day? Please don't leave Lizbeth shivering out there in the rain for nothing, the sun will come back soon and then you'll be sitting pretty with your free Tutti Fruiti.

Also available at the one-stop-gala-business table:

Kids' Gala sign ups!  See Attached. The kids will have a chance to enjoy a Gala of their very own while we're partying over at MoPA! We are so thankful to Juliana and the rest of the Prime Time staff for agreeing to help us out by offering child care during our event. It's a total win-win, because we can support the YMCA in turn when our tax deductible payments are designated to support the Mission Valley YMCA's annual community support campaign. Please sign up early for this special Parent's Night Out, payments made before February 22 will help Juliana reach her noble goal to support worthy local causes like PRYDE.

Opportunity Draw tickets - for just $10, you have a chance to win $1,000! We'll be keeping track of who buys these tickets because starting next week, the students will be competing to see which class can sell the most and earn an ice cream party!!

Volunteer Sign Ups for all that stuff I told you about last week, remember? No? That's okay, I had to re-read it myself: We need help putting together auction bundles on Feb 26, transporting everything to MoPA before event set up on Mar 12, setting up and breaking down the event.

Finally, on an unrelated but equally awesome note, Gingerlily asked me to let everyone know that the Museum School will be holding its annual Green Eggs & Ham Pajama Party on Read Across America Day, March 2nd. Please see Jane if you are able to help out in the kitchen on that morning.  A call will also go out for contributions of healthy breakfast foods for this great event.

This and all email communication can also be found on the FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM SCHOOL page of the school's website, and quick links are provided at the bottom of this email.

Thanks for your support, have a great week!

February 7, 2011

Dear Museum School Families,

It's a short week this week, so let's not waste any time! Please take a look at the two documents attached to this email. Our hope is that everything you ever wanted or needed to know about our upcoming Gala can be found in this email!

All of these documents are also available on the Museum School webpage:

The Dates and Deadlines document is a calendar of these last five weeks leading up to the big event. Please take note of the promotions we are pulling to entice you to make more donations! This week is WINE WEEK (isn't every week?), next week is CHOCOLATE WEEK (same question), and the week of Feb 21 is GIFT CARD WEEK! If you bring any of the requested items during its special week, you will automatically be entered into a drawing for something so fantastic that we can't even tell you what it is! But believe me, it will be something you want.

Wondering about what to wear, what you'll see, or what you'll get to eat and drink at the Gala? The Event Details document is where you can find the answers to those questions and more.

We know that everyone wants to help, and not everyone has been able to procure auction items or create gorgeous invitations (thank you, Felicia Watson)! Fear not, there are many ways for everyone to volunteer! Our procurement and auction committees have been busy receiving loads of items for the silent and live auctions. We didn't ask any one  person or group to create a themed basket, instead we decided to accept anything and everything and then we will group the donations into bundled packages that will go up for auction.  Can you help put these bundles together? Come to school on Saturday, February 26th at 10:00 and jump in! Volunteers will be needed for a wide variety of tasks on this day, everything from creating to categorizing to cataloging items. If you have a talent for writing catalog descriptions that rival J. Peterman's, we've got the perfect job for you! Reply to let me know you are coming, or just show up. We'll make it fun!

We'll also need volunteer help on March 12, the day of the event. We can start setting up at MoPA after 3:30, and we'll need helpers to load the auction items from school and drive them over there. If you're not rushing to relieve babysitters or Prime Time child care, we hope you'll stick around and help break down after the party. We'll continue to feed you margaritas as  long as you're working (and not driving). Reply if you need more details, or to let us know that you are available for any of these jobs.

Ticket sales are underway, have you purchased yours? Advance tickets will be sold until the day before the Gala, but please purchase yours early so the event planners can avoid inconvenient panic attacks. Don't forget to invite your friends, this is going to be a really fun party that anyone would enjoy, even those who don't know the Museum School from a hole in the wall!

January 20, 2011

Dear Museum School Families,

Isn't it great to be back in school?! I love the year round schedule, but I am always eager to drop my little darlings off after a solid month of togetherness.

Welcome to the 2nd trimester! Is it spring? Winter? Summer? Who knows. It's just January. There's lots going on:

The receipts we collected from Fresh & Easy are currently being tallied in preparation for submission by February 1st. If you are hanging on to any receipts dated between 9/15/10 and 12/31/10,  please send them in to the office by the beginning of next week.

From now until March 12, our fund raising efforts will be focused entirely on our big event of the year: PICTURE THIS: Focus on the Museum School. (click to view the event page). It's super easy to purchase TICKETS here; take advantage of the discount you'll get by buying them in advance. From the event page you can quickly share the invitation on your facebook page -  invite everyone you know! It's going to be really fun. Open bar!

Our procurement committee is hard at work collecting the most incredible assortment of items for our live and silent auctions. Keep on asking your friends, family members, and local (or far away) businesses if they want to get in on this great opportunity to support The Museum School by donating a service, an item, tickets, a time share, a gift card, etc. We will be putting together bundles of auction items, and we are hoping that every Museum School family can find something to contribute. We are particularly interested in gift cards, spa items, and wine (95 points or higher) . We will also accept unlimited amounts of cold, hard cash ... and books of stamps.

We need about 5 volunteers to help put together the beautiful event invitations that will be mailed out at the very end of this month. If you are free on Thursday, January 27 at 9:00 and can help with this task, please reply to this email.

Finally, we've got meetings coming up, please come! Friday the 21st at 4:30 for GALA planning, and Friday the 28th at 9:00 for a Friends of the Museum School board meeting.

Is this too wordy? Here's a bullet list:

 To Do:

1. Send in Fresh & Easy receipts by next week
2. Buy tickets for Picture This: Focus on the Museum School
3. Procure auction donations
4. Donate a gift card, spa item, or good bottle of wine
5. Come and help assemble invitations on Thursday, Jan 27 at 9:00
6. Come to Friday meetings

Welcome back, everyone! Have a great day.

NEW!! 2010 Holiday Shopping Guide

December 14, 2010

Dear Museum School Families,

This will be your last FRIENDly newsletter of the year! Do not fear, though, I'll be back in 2011.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make our shopping night at Fresh & Easy so enjoyable and successful, especially those of you who volunteered during the event! I have a new found respect for grocery baggers everywhere, it's stressful when those items come barreling down the conveyor belt! Especially when teetering bottles of wine are descending upon the fresh produce you are trying to secure! I'm happy to report that we baggers all survived, as did the tomatoes. We will get final word from the corporate office about how much we earned for the Museum School, but judging by the receipts we collected that totaled more than $20, the total sales were around $9,000 during our event. That's $450 in our pocket, PLUS another 5% for each of those receipts, PLUS another 5% of all of the receipts we've been collecting at school. If you have any receipts laying around the house or shop at F&E any time before 12/31, we can still submit the receipts in January.

We had a productive combined Gala planning and FOMS meeting last Friday, thank you to everyone who was able to attend! Minutes can be viewed on the museum school website.

When we return from the winter break, we will be asking for those BOX TOPS that you've been collecting all trimester! Did you know that Avery products also have box tops? Bring a pair of scissors into the supply room at your office and clip, clip, clip!

See you all tomorrow night for our first Holiday Program! And guess what? This one is entirely FREE!!!! Unless, of course, you want to buy t-shirts and tote bags.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy, holiday and all good things in 2011.

November 9, 2010

Dear Museum School Families,

Be sure to check your email tomorrow for a special announcement about a wonderful opportunity to build the Museum School library by purchasing beautiful, timeless USBORNE BOOKS! A huge thank you goes out to our own Museum School parent Linda Ullrich for making this opportunity available to us.

It's all COOL at the Museum School! We had had a great response for the Studio Recording Event this Thursday! It's not too late to join the fun, the sign up flier is attached for your convenience, or you can make arrangements with Jane in the office or Dan and Julie out front before school.

And the good stuff just keeps coming - you'll hear more about this in the weeks to come, but we don't want to miss the chance to start earning even more effortless money for our kids' school just by adding a few letters to the address we type in to shop at Amazon. Check it out:

Here is an easy way to earn money for our school. No need to sign up or register. All you have to do is remember to use our link every time you shop at Amazon . com. Please make sure that all your friends, family and everybody you know does the same. If everybody gets into the habit of using this link instead of typing in Amazon in the address bar of your browser, our school could earn a lot of money.

For now there is a website with the link.  http://ms-fundraiser.webs.com/

Please bookmark it and remember to use it every time. Also, tell everybody you know to do this. Soon the link will appear on our school website, too.

Thank you to Krisztina Hagey for taking the initiative to get this ball rolling! Perhaps it will inspire me to start my holiday shopping early this year! There's always hope.

And last but not least (are you still there?) Please join the FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM SCHOOL for a meeting this Friday, November 12 at 9:00. I won't be there, so if you've been looking for a good time to complain about all of these annoying emails, this is it!

Have a great week =)

November 2, 2010

Hello, Museum School FRIENDS!

Or should I say "Howdy"?  Thanks to everyone who make our first Halloween Hoe-Down such fun, especially Marianna and Bill Moran for spearheading the effort to make it happen!

It's time to sign up for your family's place in history as a recording star! Don't miss this chance to participate in this rare opportunity for a real recording studio experience on Thursday, November 11th. The kids are all excited to share in this truly special experience. Print the attached flier as a reminder to reserve your space by checking in with Julie or Dan in front of school; or with Jane in the office. The suggested donation is just $25 per family, and you can head in at either 11:00 am or 6:30 pm for your chance to shine in the spotlight!

After enjoying the day off and celebrating your inner rock star, please join us on the morning of Friday, 11/12 for a 9:00 meeting of the FRIENDs of the Museum School!  We've got lots of ideas and plans brewing, please come and share your voice.

Speaking of sharing your voice, please make time to VOTE today!

It's a new month... have you submitted your pledge payment to the office? Please let Jane know if you need help figuring out the best method to make recurring payments. And THANK YOU!!

Have a great week

October 13, 2010

Dear Museum School Families,

Please print the attached flier if you are planning to enjoy a delicious and lucrative dinner at SOUP PLANTATION this Thursday, Oct 14 between 5-8 pm.

We enjoyed our second FOMS meeting of the year on Friday, October 8th. Minutes can be found on the webpage. Please join us for upcoming meetings on the second Friday of each month at 9:00 am.

Let's keep our fundraising momentum going -  the planning crew for our BIG EVENT of the year, "Picture This: Focus on the Museum School" (March 12, 2011 at MoPA) will begin holding monthly meetings to pull it all together. Remember, many hands make light work - we hope you will share your ideas, resources, time, and talent so that together we can make this an event to enjoy and remember.

Look for information about a fun fall event that is being planned for Thursday, October 28th from 3:00-5:30 - our first Haunted Hoe-Down! If you like to plan ahead, word on the street is that we'll be looking for donations of baked goods on that date.

We plan lots of events, and we know that you probably can not participate in every single fundraiser. By keeping our events varied and spread out throughout the year, our expectation is that each family will pick and choose those that are exciting and reasonable for them to support. The more support you give, the better results for your children. It's a win-win! Your feedback and opinions are valued, YOU are the Friends of the Museum School. Please email comments to museumschoolfriends@gmail.com.

Thank you, and have a wonderful week!

October 6, 2010

Dear Museum School Families,

Lots going on these days in our little corner of the world. I'll be brief with bullet points to keep your attention:

  • FOMS meeting this Friday, October 8th at 9:00. Please join us! Come on, it'll be fun!
  • Have you sent out your Friends and Family letters yet? In years past, this easy campaign has raised almost $40,000 for the school! Additional letters are available in the office, please return any letters that you are unable to use.
  • Speaking of raising $$$$, it's a new month.. have you made your pledge payment?
  • October 14 - have dinner at Soup Plantation in Point Loma and 20% of what you spend will be donated back to the school! Be sure to take the flier that will be in your mailbox.
  • Fresh and Easy - we've formed a new partnership that will bring money into the school with minimal effort! Have you been to the new Fresh and Easy Market located at 32nd and University? It's a great place to get your groceries, and they like to support schools in the neighborhood. We'll soon have collection boxes available where you can simply turn in any receipt from any Fresh and Easy market, and they'll give us $1 for every $20 that is spent! The only fine print is that qualifying transactions must total at least $20, you can't combine receipts to add up to $20. There is great potential here, so please shop at Fresh and Easy and hang onto your receipts. They will also support the Museum School by donating 5% of all sales made at the store on Thursday, December 9th between 4:00-8:00 pm! Mark your calendars, and you can bet that more info will be provided as the date approaches.
  • Volunteers, be sure to sign in with Jane to log the hours that you volunteer at school. The data from your volunteer forms is being distributed to committee leaders as we speak. If you volunteered to help out in the classroom, the teacher has been informed and you can check in to set up regular times. Volunteers for event committees and specific tasks will be contacted via email as specific dates approach. A meeting for Gala volunteers will soon be scheduled, and information will be forthcoming on additional events that are being considered for this fall/winter (come to the meeting if you want to help finalize these decisions). If you signed up to be a room parent or a work room volunteer, look for a separate email from me soon. We are in the happy position of having more people than jobs in these categories, so I'm working out a system to randomly select interested folks for rotations. I'm sorry that it's taking so long, but rest assured that the work isn't going anywhere.
  • Directories will be ready for distribution early next week. I'll be looking for a few volunteers to run copies, collate, staple and distribute. Please reply to this email if you are available to help with this for an hour or so on Monday afternoon (Oct 11).

Thank you!

August 30, 2010

Dear Museum School Families,

While our children count down their final days of summer break, we parents are gearing up for another wonderful year at the Museum School! This email is mostly meant to test the email list* used by the Friends of the Museum School foundation, whose sole purpose is to support our school. You are all Friends of the Museum School - please join the first meeting of FOMS on Friday, September 10 at 9:00.

Packets are currently being prepared for back-to-school purposes, which will include lots of information about the ways you can support the Museum School, and your first opportunity to sign on for volunteering this year. You will also receive a form that must be completed if you wish to have any of your family’s contact information distributed in our school directory.

If you’ve got some time this week, volunteers are needed to help out with the back to school Potluck on Friday (mostly set up and contribution of paper products), and virtually all of the teachers could use some help with start up tasks as they prepare the classrooms for the return of our eager young students! As you finish up your back-to-school shopping, we hope you can include an item or two from the art supply list. Stocking the art and supply rooms allows us to dedicate more funding toward special programs and enrichment. Thank you for your generosity and assistance!

Important Dates in September: (hint: you can print a monthly calendar right from the school webpage)

Sept 3   Back to School Potluck, 4-6pm, school courtyard

Sept 10 FOMS meeting, 9-10 am, work or art room at school
Governance Board meeting, 4:30 pm, work room

Sept 12 Pixie Salon Fundraiser (click to see flier)

Sept 23 Back to School Night, 5:30-7pm

*If you would prefer not to receive emails from FOMS at this address, please reply and request that it be changed or removed from this distribution list. Also, please let us know if you receive duplicate messages at the same email address.

Looking forward to a great year together at the Museum School!
